Saiki and Sasako - 50% of what?

One current exchange brewing in Solo news cyberspace is between Alfred Sasako and an online letter to the editor-writer called Saiki.

Others have now jumped in to back either side (eg here and here), and some egos may come into play, but at its is crux is one important issue: when Kelvyn Alps and Pheonix (and Sasako) talk about a 50/50 split with landowners in the proposed alluvial mining venture, what are they splitting?

In other words, 50% of what? Saiki's query was: "after the gross revenues before deducting any cost and expenses of the operations or on the net profit after tax?"

This would seem to be a good thing to clear up from the get go...mining is the new logging, and like the old logging, who gets exactly what and how is the $1 billion question.

Watch this space....Alp's answer should teach us a lot - especially if it is silence!

3 years on...riot report to be tabled

Radio Australia reports that the Commission of Inquiry report into the 2006 riots will finally be tabled in parliament this week.

If so, it will be around 3 years to the day, from the 5 April 2006 elections that elected the current house into parliament.

The report is a long time coming, it being handed to PM Sikua almost a year ago on 25 April 2008.

It has had a convoluted history, igniting international controversy that eventually led to the downfall of Moti and the Sogovare government. This all comes only 1 week after the first appointed chair of the Commission, the judge Marcus Einfeld, was sentenced to 2 years for perjury about a speeding offence.

It may turn out that Chinatown was only the first thing destroyed by the riots on 18 April 2006.

"Dark corner" ... getting darker?

Last week brought news about suspicions of foul play around a young girl's body found around Lungga River mouth. The same week saw a notorious public figure resident there - John Seti Iromea - in court over alleged arson.

"Dark corner" is what the Lungga delta area around Burns Creek has become known as. These happenings beg the question - Is it improving or is it getting darker? And what does it say about Honiara and its surroundings?
